ARTIST STATEMENT

Unknown is a photographic series that explores femininity through obscurity. Specifically, this body of work portrays the characteristics that are often associated with being feminine, thus concealing the individual’s identity. In each image, the subject’s face is not fully shown but rather masked to a certain extent. This is a demonstration of the way in which society has “obscured” their identity with the construction of their own rendition of being feminine. My intention of this piece was to express the removal of a female’s individuality, and replacing it with a characteristic in a way that is confronting the viewer. My goal of this series was to show the beauty and positivity that females hold by embracing their feminine qualities despite any stereotypical and negative connotations that have been formed and discussed throughout time. I want this series to show that these ideas do not define females but instead act as a mask, as we do not know who this individual actually is — instead they remain unknown.
