My Sister and I

ARTIST STATEMENT

My Sister and I is a photographic series that explores the dynamics of sisterhood and the perceived bond that is often idealized. These self-portrait images are an examination of my relationship with my younger sister Allison, while looking at the thematic subject of identity. Each image provides a subtle depiction of us as separate individuals while still being photographed as a pair. I wish to indicate a clear distinction of growth while suggesting the difficulty of searching for your own identity while growing up with a sister. Self-reflection and childhood memories are relevant to this piece as it provides context for the formation of our own identity. Through the experiences that we have shared together, specific places and characteristics of such memories are revisited throughout the project in order to reflect the strong and complex relationship that has been established. My Sister and I holds great value as a project for both of us. It provided us with the opportunity to reflect more deeply on our past and become aware of how our genuine relationship has structured and helped us transform into the young women that we are today. She is considerably the closest person to me and the reason for an emotional attachment to this body of work.
